ANCAP today released 5 star safety ratings for the Kia Rondo, the Mazda6 and the Renault Clio, providing more safe choices for new car buyers across the market.

The rating applies to all variants of the Rondo and gives Kia a 5 star performer in the people mover category to add to its 5 star small, medium and SUV ranges.

ANCAP Chairman Lauchlan McIntosh said “the Rondo is a welcome addition to the family-oriented people mover market. The Rondo performed well in all tests, including whiplash testing, and it is pleasing to see that advanced seat belt reminders are standard for all seats, including the 3rd row in the 7 seat variant. However, it is disappointing that head protecting side (or curtain) airbags for 3rd row occupants are not available.”

Mazda’s popular Mazda6 continues to provide a 5 star option for medium car buyers, with the rating extending to all current Australasian variants. The Mazda6 held its shape well in the frontal offset test with pedal and steering wheel movement well controlled. Driver and passenger contact with airbags was stable and good protection was provided for the driver in both side impact and whiplash tests. Curtain airbags and advanced seat belt reminders are standard for both front and rear occupants.

Renault’s 3-cylinder petrol-engined Clio also performed well in crash tests. The 4-cylinder Clio variant is unrated. Mr McIntosh noted that “while the Clio provided good head and chest protection for the driver in the side impact and pole tests, it is disappointing that head protecting side airbags for rear occupants are not available.”

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, Australian state and territory governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
